New Students

Get ready for the ride of your life!

Thinking about trying Bikram yoga? Feeling nervous, scared or a little intimidated?

No problem.

Many people feel that way initially.

Suspend your disbelief. Just for 90 minutes–and come to your first class. Bikram designed this class for beginners, so know that with a little practice and experience, you’ll quickly feel right at home.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day so you’re well hydrated. Good hydration supports the healthy function of all of your body’s systems, and it makes the heat feel comfortable rather than overwhelming. Refrain from eating heavily within three hours of the start of class, too.

Arrive 15 to 20 minutes early, please. Be sure to check in at the front desk. This gives us time for registration and orientation. Arriving early ensures a stress-free and relaxed beginning to your life-long Bikram Yoga practice.

Be sure to print and complete our BYCF Waiver and Release Agreement 12/11; remember to bring it with you!

Bikram’s Yoga is for absolutely everyone. To quote Bishnu Ghosh, “it’s never too late, you’re never too old, you’re never too sick, to start again from scratch.” Come to class, and with the guidance of your teacher, complete every posture to the best of your individual ability at that particular moment in time.

By trying the right way, you receive 100% benefit.

Don’t think you have to get in shape before coming to class – that puts the cart before the horse! Come take your first class, and then take class as often as you possibly can. You will quickly lose weight, get in shape, and feel absolutely wonderful.

Dress in cool, comfortable clothes. No long sleeves or pants please.

You will feel challenged by the hot room and the yoga postures – everyone does! Always work to your edge, but listen to your body and your inner wisdom. Never be afraid to lay down if you need to. It’s normal, especially when you first get started, to feel dizzy, nauseated or lightheaded. It’s temporary. Respect these signals by backing off. As your body acclimates, improves and detoxes, these sensations will disappear.

During class nobody will look at you or judge you. The teacher will guide you and instruct you, always with compassion and respect. There’s no need or reason to be self conscious. It’s also helpful to realize everyone’s focus is on themselves – they are working too hard to even notice you!

Take your second class within 24 hours. This will help you bypass any soreness you’d experience otherwise.

Keep an open mind. Come back over and over and over again. It will transform your life, your body and your mind.

Please bring a yoga mat, large bath towel and drinking water. We also have these items available for sale at the studio.

Remember, everyone had their very first Bikram Yoga class, even the people on the front row who have been coming for years. They make it look easy because they persevered, and you can too.

If not now, then when?

Shut down your computer and come to class. It’s the very best place to be, the very best decision you could possibly make. You. Taking care of You.

For religious reasons I wear long sleeves/long pants and a headscarf…would you not recommend that I come to the class?

Hi Alia, you are more than welcome to come to class, wearing clothing that is appropriate for you. If long sleeves/long pants are necessary for you, perhaps you could choose a lightweight fabric? Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you very much! I was always hesitant to come for that reason….but i will most definitely try to come in!

Hi this my first time checking out the website. I have been thinking about starting yoga but i have a bad knee problem. Can i still do most of the postures or are the instructors able to help with modified postures.

I was wondering what kind of student discounts you offered, if any. And how old you have to be.

    • meganvr says:

Hello Nadmar! We do offer student discounts on our class cards and unlimited memberships. You may stop into the studio any time for more details. (The introductory week is $20 for everyone, including students.) Generally speaking, it’s a good idea for students to be at least 12 years old before attempting to complete a full class. If you are under 18, you will need a parent or guardian to sign your waiver.
